- *Summer Institutes are a variety of sessions that dig into writing workshop. They provide the nuts and bolts necessary to put writing workshop into practice. Classes include: "Launching the Writing Workshop", "Non-Narrative Writing", "Memoir: Revisiting Narrative Writing", "Deepening the Reading/Writing Connection", "Setting Up/Managing Writing Workshop", "Methods of Teaching Mini-Lessons", and "Unpacking Genre in the Writing Workshop". - New Teachers Summer Academy is a two-day training addresses critical groundwork of the first days and weeks of school. We prepare new teachers for the challenges they will face and choices they will make as they set up their classrooms, build their classroom community and their curriculum. The Academy includes sessions on behavior management, rules and procedures, communicating with families and standards-based instructional design - areas identified by beginning teachers as their greatest needs in starting the school year successfully
- Study Groups are small groups (generally 5-10 participants) led by our coaches. They meet for three times, 90 minutes each. Click here to see a list of upcoming study groups and to register. Beginning Teacher Working Meetings - Our coaches host monthly meetings for beginning teachers. We share teaching techniques, innovative lessons, camaraderie, dinner, stories and learn from each other. - Beginning Teacher Working Meetings for Special Education Teachers - These meetings are designed to meet the specific needs of our special education teachers. They focus on topics such as IEPs, assessment, data collection, advocacy and curriculum. See the flyer from 2008-09
- Beginning Teacher Seminars - These happen twice a year and they are a chance for all of our teachers to come together. We've brought in amazing guest speakers (like Esme Raji Codell) and had some fantastic break-out sessions to ensure that beginning teachers can help guide their own learning. - Mentor Academy - Mentor Academies are intense, 3-day workshops designed specifically to meet the needs of coaches who work with beginning teachers. Each workshop is crafted around one particular topic. Click here for more information.
- School Year Kick-Off Event - Our annual kick-off event helps teachers start the year off right. In the past, we've featured tremendous guest speakers (like Pedro Noguera) to inspire teachers. Break-out sessions help teachers plan their classroom libraries and help craft curriculum. We've raffled off much needed school supplies for teachers to help build their classrooms. - High School Math Project - The High School Math Project brought together over 50 Chicago Public School teachers for 18 hours of professional development around using technology to help compliment engaging mathematics instruction. See the flyer here.
