Who We Are

This we know: Teacher quality is the most powerful school-based contributor to student achievement and beginning teachers need specialized supports to become effective. That’s why, since 2006, the Chicago New Teacher Center has worked in partnership with Chicago Public Schools to help new teachers meet the learning needs of their students by rapidly improving their teaching practice.

CNTC is the Chicago office of the renowned New Teacher Center, which began its work more than 20 years ago and is today the national leader in the area of new teacher development.

In Chicago, high quality induction means leveraging resources to provide direct support to teachers through coaching, while also supporting school leadership and improving literacy instruction. High quality mentoring and induction is critical to growing and retaining effective new teachers in Chicago’s hardest-to-staff Instructional Areas, and instrumental in accelerating the pace of their development.

At the heart of our work is the belief that every child is entitled to a quality education. We strive to improve student learning through specialized and intensive supports for teachers in their critical first years, to quickly guide them to becoming the skillful and successful educators all children deserve. In the high-need neighborhood schools we serve, well-prepared teachers are a critical thread in the fabric of communities.

Our supports are both highly personalized and data-driven. Through a rigorous cycle aligned to the phases of new teacher development, our coaches guide new teachers through these predictable stages—and all of the unanticipated events—to systematically improve instruction.

Over the two-year coaching cycle, these strategic supports and dynamic professional relationships have been shown to help retain new teachers in CPS, and enhance and accelerate their instructional proficiency, ultimately advancing student learning.
